Tapas Sarkar

(b.-0001)

Tapas Sarkar is an accomplished Indian sculptor whose practice spans public art, monumental sculpture, and contemporary three-dimensional forms. A graduate of the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, he has built a distinguished career as an independent sculptor and has been recognised as a Senior Fellow by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Over several decades, Sarkar has emerged as an important figure in contemporary Indian sculpture, known particularly for his large-scale public works and site-specific installations. His artistic achievements have been recognised through numerous awards and honours, including the Academy of Fine Arts Award (1978) and the Madhya Pradesh State Lalit Kala Akademi Award, among others received from state and national cultural institutions.

Since 1978, he has held eleven solo exhibitions across major Indian cities and has participated extensively in group exhibitions, sculpture camps, and national and international workshops. His work reflects a sustained engagement with material, scale, and spatial relationships, often exploring the expressive possibilities of sculpture within public and architectural environments.

A significant aspect of Sarkar’s career has been his contribution to public art. He has executed more than thirty-four monumental sculptures and installations ranging in height from 10 to 55 feet for leading public sector and government organisations, including NTPC, SAIL, IFFCO, and various state and central government agencies. These projects have established his reputation as one of the few Indian sculptors with extensive experience in large-scale civic and institutional commissions.

Sarkar has also participated in several prestigious workshops and artist camps in India and abroad, including programmes associated with the Ramkinkar Baij Centenary celebrations, bronze casting workshops organised by the Lalit Kala Akademi, and initiatives conducted by Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan.

Through a career spanning more than four decades, Tapas Sarkar has made a significant contribution to the development of contemporary Indian sculpture, particularly in the field of public and monumental art, where his works continue to engage diverse audiences across the country.
