Press Release
This year is special to Kolkata. It is the year when one of the city’s most potent body of artists—the Society of Contemporary Artists (SCA), founded in 1960— completes 50 years of its existence, as 2009 comes to a close.
With the likes of the late Bikash Bhattacharjee, Manu Parekh and Somnath Hore among its members, the Society has been a major force in charting the course that contemporary Indian art has taken. The Society—as it is popularly known in artistic circles—is actually more than just a body. It is a movement, a force to reckon with in contemporary Indian art.
And Aakriti Art Gallery joins in the celebrations of the Society’s Golden Jubilee celebrations with a unique exhibition, starting on December 14 at its 12/3A, Hungerford Street premises. All 22 members of the Society will showcase a piece of sculpture each in this exhibition, which has quite literally been termed as ‘50th Anniversary Celebrations: Sculpture Show of Society of Contemporary Artists’. The Show will be on till 31 December.
And on the day of the inauguration, there are grand plans. While Mrs. Sarala Birla, the chairperson of the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, will inaugurate the exhibition, Aakriti Art Gallery will felicitate senior artist & founder members Sanat Kar and Sunil Das on the occasion.
On display, will be 46 pieces of sculpture that would include contributions of the current 22 members of the SCA along with one by Swapan Kumar Das, who died recently.
For the connoisseur, the last fortnight of the year, would therefore be a rare treat with a grand display of sculptures by B R Panesar, Amitava Banerjee, Sanat Kar, Dipak Banerjee, Ganesh Haloi, Suhas Roy, Lalu Prasad Shaw, Sunil Das, Niranjan Pradhan, Manu Parekh, Manik Talukdar, Sadhan Chakravarty, Sunil Kumar Das, Aditya Basak, Manoj Mitra, Bimal Kundu, Manoj Dutta, Pradip Maitra, Atanu Bhattacharya, Atin Basak and Partha Dasgupta., side-by-side, in gorgeous display—a veritable journey back in time and forward, a deja-vu and a future-vision all in one, as the artists, painters, sculptors, masters of their craft join in to recreate the magic that started fifty years back.
