Amlan Dutta is a young and emerging contemporary artist whose work stands out for its hyperrealistic precision, surreal atmospheres, and a unique ability to transform everyday objects into metaphoric landscapes. His paintings juxtapose meticulously rendered forms—telephones, umbrellas, ceremonial rituals, city monuments—against vast, dream-like backgrounds, creating an expressive tension between the real and the unreal. Working with a heightened sense of detail and a refined tonal palette, Dutta constructs visual narratives that invite viewers into spaces shaped by memory, imagination, and psychological depth.

Educated at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, where he earned a Diploma in Visual Arts in 2003, Dutta developed a strong foundation in drawing and observational accuracy. Over time, his practice evolved into a distinctive style that merges hyperrealism with surrealist spatiality, resulting in compositions that appear both familiar and uncanny. His cityscapes—such as his views of Kolkata’s Victoria Memorial or Mumbai’s Gateway of India—are celebrated for their clarity, luminosity, and evocative urban nostalgia.

Dutta’s work has been exhibited widely across India. His major exhibitions include Gen Next II at Aakriti Art Gallery (2007), Autumn Mystique at Birla Academy (2008), Ganges Art Gallery (2011), Kalakriti Art Gallery, Hyderabad (2010), Chemould Art Gallery (2008), and multiple editions of the All India Fine Art Exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts (2004–2007). His early recognition came through platforms such as the Camel 7th Eastern Region Art Exhibition (2006) and the Birla Academy Annual Exhibition (2009).

Whether depicting rows of abandoned telephones in a barren expanse or monumental umbrellas overshadowing solitary human figures, Amlan Dutta crafts images that explore loneliness, silence, urban memory, and the strange poetics of the everyday. His growing body of work positions him as a compelling voice in contemporary Indian hyperrealism and surrealist-inspired visual storytelling.
