Asim Basu is a contemporary Indian sculptor whose practice engages with the intersections of abstraction, narrative, and lived experience. Born in 1947, he received his formal art education from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, one of India’s most significant institutions for modern art training. Active on the exhibition circuit since the early 1970s, Basu has participated in numerous group exhibitions and annual shows, establishing a sustained presence within the institutional art framework of India.
Since 1971, his works have been featured in important exhibitions at venues such as the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, Birla Academy of Art & Culture, Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, Lalit Kala Akademi, and AIFACS, New Delhi. His association with Aakriti Art Gallery, Kolkata, including participation in group exhibitions such as those held in 2007, has further positioned his work within contemporary curatorial contexts.
Basu’s sculptural practice is primarily realised in metal, a medium through which he constructs forms that balance structural abstraction with subtle narrative impulses. Rather than pursuing pure formalism, his sculptures suggest fragmentary tales embedded within abstract configurations. This interplay between abstraction and implied narrative generates a sense of movement and vitality, encouraging viewers to engage not only visually but also experientially.
His work reflects a sensitivity to the mundane realities of everyday life, reimagined through contemporary sculptural language.
