Dasgupta studied in Kala Bhavan Santiniketan from 1957-61. He was a member, of the Society of Contemporary Artists Calcutta 1970,. He was part of the faculty at  Saint Thomas School in Howrah 1979-85. He was the dean and curator of the Rabindra Bharati University Museum Calcutta 1985-97.He had his solo shows in Artistry House Calcutta 1963, Kala Yatra Madras 1984, Dhoominal Art Gallery 1985 and 1991, Calcutta Art Gallery Calcutta 1985, Chitrakoot Gallery Calcutta 1988, Retrospective at Birla Academy 1997, Jahangir Art Gallery Mumbai Vadehra New Delhi and Galevie 88 Calcutta in 2000.
The artist was awarded Siromani Purashkar from Asian Paints on 1989.
