Dipak Kundu is a contemporary Indian artist whose practice
engages deeply with the psychological and symbolic dimensions of human
experience. Born in 1976, Kundu explores themes drawn from psychoanalytic
theory, particularly the dual concepts of Eros and Thanatos as articulated by
Sigmund Freud. His works examine the fragile equilibrium between desire and
mortality, situating life, love, and sexuality in constant dialogue with the
inevitability of death.
Kundu’s paintings function as visual meditations on the
human psyche, addressing the emotional and psychological tensions that shape
relationships between the sexes. His imagery often unfolds through a synthesis
of figurative and semi-figurative forms, where one image mirrors or responds to
another in a symbolic and reflective manner. This duality recalls the yin–yang
principle, which appears recurrently in his compositions, reinforcing the
notion of opposites as interdependent forces.
Sexuality in Kundu’s work is not presented as corporeal
spectacle but as a mystified and elevated union, imbued with spiritual
resonance. This approach lends his paintings an ethereal quality, allowing
intimacy and transcendence to coexist within the same pictorial space. His
visual language is further enriched by references to Indian mythology and
folklore, grounding his psychological explorations within a cultural framework
that renders them both familiar and accessible to the viewer.
