Pandeya Surendra obtained his Diploma in Fine Arts from Kala Bhawan, Visva Bharati, Santiniketan and had the privilege to study sculpture under Late Shri Ram Kinker Baij. He went to USA on Portfolio Scholarship and obtained his Bachelor\'s degree in 1964 from Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland, Ohio. At the age of 72 he is able to maintain his youthful vigour and commitment to his creative pursuits. He held his last one-man show at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi in December, 2006.
He prefers metal casting or carves his sculptures in stone. At times, he works in mixed media and makes extremely thoughtful use of bronze cast elements blended with stone carved forms which creates a very special effect in his sculptures.
Pandeya Surendra has curious way of working. He meditates to drive out his thoughts until he is left with blank spaces. Out of this blank space his form emerges. As it is time and space is an integral part of his creativity. He has an extremely powerful sense of form which moves from linear to solid structures and gives monumental qualities to many of his sculptures.
He is a leading art educationist. He served as Principal, College of Arts and Crafts and Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts, Patna University, Patna until 1993.
