Supam Adhikary is a contemporary Indian painter whose
practice reflects a sustained engagement with abstraction, grounded in rigorous
academic training and refined through steady formal exploration. Born in 1972,
he holds a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Indian Society of Oriental Art,
Kolkata, where his education emphasized compositional structure, colour theory,
and the nuanced dialogue between figuration and abstraction—foundations that
continue to inform his mature work.
Adhikary’s early career was marked by two significant solo
exhibitions that established his presence within Kolkata’s critical art milieu:
Super Cognition at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata (2001) and An Eloquent
Silence at Gallery Chemould, Kolkata (2002). In the same year, his promise was
formally recognised with the Lilabati K. Shah Memorial Award from the Indian
Society of Oriental Art, underscoring his early critical reception.
Alongside these solo presentations, Adhikary has
participated in several notable group exhibitions, including Rapport (2002),
the INFOCOM Exhibition, Kolkata (2005), and a collaborative art camp in 2005.
His selection for Gen Next at Aakriti Art Gallery, Kolkata (2006) placed him
among a cohort of artists identified for shaping emergent directions in Indian
contemporary painting.
Works presented through Aakriti Art Gallery reveal a
painterly language characterized by layered surfaces, textured pigment, and
controlled chromatic intensity. Adhikary’s compositions often oscillate between
gestural spontaneity and structural balance, producing visual fields that feel
both intimate and expansive. This productive tension—between precision and
freedom—anchors his practice within the broader trajectory of post-millennial
Indian abstraction.
Overall, Supam Adhikary’s career demonstrates a consistent
commitment to formal experimentation rooted in academic discipline, positioning
him as a significant voice among a younger generation of painters navigating
the intersections of tradition and contemporary expression in Indian art.
