Tathi Premchand is a contemporary Indian artist whose
practice evolved through a sustained period of independent studio engagement
and a strong grounding in applied art. He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts
(Applied Art) in 1990 from the Government School of Art, Aurangabad, where he
received formal training in drawing, composition, and visual communication.
Following his academic education, Premchand dedicated nearly a decade
(1996–2004) to intensive studio practice, working independently until he
arrived at a visual language he considered mature and resolved.
Premchand’s work is marked by conceptual clarity and formal
discipline, often engaging with systems, structures, and symbolic constructs
that bridge art, mathematics, and social observation. His paintings and graphic
explorations reveal a methodical approach, where repetition, contrast, and
reduction play a central role. This intellectual rigor is balanced by an
underlying visual wit and experimentation, allowing his work to remain accessible
while conceptually layered.
His exhibition history reflects an active engagement with
both physical and emerging digital platforms. In 2005, he held his first major
solo exhibition, Pomegranate, at Kalakriti Fine Art Gallery, Mumbai, accompanied
by the release of a book documenting the series. The same year, he participated
in several significant group exhibitions, including Black & White at Zebra
(Kalakriti Fine Art Gallery), Legacy at Nariman Point, the Mumbai–Shanghai Art
Show, Monsoon Mania, and The Black Show at Art Circle, Dadar.
Premchand presented subsequent solo exhibitions such as The
Indian Mathematical Ruler–I (2006) and The Indian Mathematical Ruler–II (2007)
at Art Circle Studio, Dadar, further consolidating his conceptual direction.
His works were also featured repeatedly through Saffronart’s online platform
between 2005 and 2009, reflecting early engagement with digital exhibition
formats.
He has participated in notable group exhibitions including
the Harmony Show at Nehru Centre, Mumbai (2008), Signature Art Fest at Aakriti
Art Gallery, Kolkata (2008), and a group exhibition at Alliance Française
Gallery, New Delhi (2009). His works have also appeared in curated auctions
such as the BNHS Greenscape–II Art Auction organised by Pheroza Godrej at the
Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai (2007).
Premchand’s early promise was recognised through several
accolades, including Gold Medal in Clay Modelling (1988), First Prize in
Drawing & Sketching (1989), and First Prize in the Annual Exhibition at the
Government School of Art, Aurangabad (1990).
Through a practice rooted in discipline, introspection, and
sustained studio inquiry, Tathi Premchand continues to contribute a distinctive
conceptual voice to contemporary Indian art.
