Profile:

Arindam Chatterjee is a distinguished contemporary Indian painter whose practice reflects a thoughtful engagement with form, colour, and the evolving language of modern Indian art. Trained in both academic and modernist traditions, Chatterjee has developed a visual vocabulary that balances technical discipline with expressive freedom.

He graduated from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, one of India’s most prestigious art institutions, and subsequently obtained an Advanced Diploma from Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, in 1977. The influence of Santiniketan’s humanistic and experimental artistic environment is evident in his mature body of work.

Over the course of his career, Chatterjee has exhibited extensively in India and abroad. He represented India at the prestigious Triennale India in 2005 and has held several important solo exhibitions, including at Tao Art Gallery, Mumbai (2006); Gallery Art Motif, New Delhi (2005); Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi (2003); and Chitrakoot Art Gallery, Kolkata (1997–98, 2001–02, and 2005).

His artistic achievements have been recognised through numerous awards and honours, including the Silver Prize at the Drawing and Design Exhibition, Kyoto Art College, Japan; the Birla Academy Annual Exhibition Award; the H.K. Kejriwal Award; and the National Cultural Scholarship in Painting.

Chatterjee’s works form part of several important public and private collections, including the collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), New Delhi.

Through a sustained and evolving practice spanning several decades, Arindam Chatterjee has established himself as a significant voice in contemporary Indian painting, contributing meaningfully to the ongoing dialogue between tradition and modernity in Indian art.
