Established in 2005, Aakriti Art Gallery has emerged as one of India’s leading platforms for modern and contemporary art, combining curatorial excellence, scholarship, publishing, artist promotion, and cultural engagement. Based in Kolkata and working across India, the gallery has spent two decades building meaningful connections between artists, collectors, institutions, and audiences while contributing to the wider discourse of Indian art.

Over the years, Aakriti has organised numerous solo and group exhibitions featuring some of the most respected names in Indian art. The gallery has presented important solo exhibitions by Ram Kumar, Satish Gujral, K.G. Subramanyan, Bikash Bhattacharjee, Sakti Burman, Rabin Mondal, Lalu Prasad Shaw, Akhilesh, Bhajju Shyam, Yusuf, Gurcharan Singh and several other distinguished artists whose work has shaped the landscape of modern and contemporary Indian art. Through these exhibitions, Aakriti has consistently sought to present significant artistic voices to both established collectors and new audiences.

Among the gallery’s most recognised initiatives is the Masterpieces series, which brings together rare and historically important works by leading Indian masters. Conceived as an opportunity for collectors, scholars, and enthusiasts to engage with exceptional artworks, the series has featured works by artists including Abanindranath Tagore, Jamini Roy, Ganesh Pyne, M.F. Husain, S.H. Raza, K.G. Subramanyan, Bikash Bhattacharjee, Rabin Mondal, Ram Kumar and many others, reaffirming the gallery’s commitment to preserving and celebrating artistic legacies. 

Aakriti has also played an important role in nurturing emerging talent through its pioneering GenNext programme. Introduced in the early years of the new millennium, GenNext has provided a platform for numerous young artists from across India and beyond, many of whom have gone on to establish successful professional careers. Complementing this initiative is the gallery’s long-running Affordable September Art Mela, an annual exhibition that has become a significant event in Kolkata’s cultural calendar. Bringing together works by established masters and emerging artists, the Art Mela reflects Aakriti’s belief that original art should be accessible to a wider audience and encourages new generations of collectors to engage with art. 

Beyond exhibitions, Aakriti Art Gallery has actively contributed to the documentation and dissemination of art through publications, catalogues, research projects, and archival initiatives. Through its publishing activities and the Art News & Views platform, the gallery has promoted critical writing, artist documentation, interviews, exhibition reviews, and art historical research, creating valuable resources for collectors, scholars, and students of art.

Recent years have witnessed an expansion of the gallery’s curatorial and research-driven activities through exhibitions such as Women Sculptors in Modern India, Bengal Beyond Boundaries, Ethereal Forms: A Tribute to Shankar Ghosh, Visions Unveiled: The Canvas Symphony of Yusuf, A World Made Visible by Gurcharan Singh, and numerous thematic exhibitions exploring the evolving narratives of Indian art. These projects reflect the gallery’s commitment to presenting diverse artistic practices while encouraging meaningful cultural dialogue. 

Education and engagement remain central to Aakriti’s philosophy. The gallery regularly organises artist interactions, talks, workshops, seminars, art camps, and special projects that encourage deeper understanding of visual culture and informed collecting. Through its growing digital archive, online exhibitions, publications, and AI-powered advisory platform Ask Aakriti, the gallery continues to explore new ways of connecting audiences with art and knowledge.

About Art Insights
Research. Archives. Perspective.

Art Insights is the research and publishing initiative of Aakriti Art Gallery, dedicated to advancing the understanding, appreciation, and documentation of Indian Modern and Contemporary Art. Conceived as a long-term knowledge platform, it seeks to bridge the worlds of scholarship, collecting, publishing, and archival preservation.

At a time when art historical narratives are constantly evolving, Art Insights aims to bring to light overlooked artists, forgotten movements, regional histories, rare publications, exhibition records, and other aspects of Indian art that deserve renewed attention. Through carefully researched articles, archival documentation, and informed commentary, the initiative encourages deeper engagement with India’s rich artistic heritage.

Our Three Pillars

• Talk Art
  Talk Art is the editorial and research section of Art Insights. It features original articles, essays, collector guides, artist studies, market analysis, and research on underexplored subjects within Indian art. Particular emphasis is placed on offbeat themes, forgotten artists, lost histories, regional art movements, archives, provenance, collecting, and scholarship.
  Most articles are researched, compiled, and edited by the in-house research team under the stewardship of Vikram Bachhawat, Founder-Director of Aakriti Art Gallery. The platform also welcomes contributions from distinguished art historians, critics, curators, artists, museum professionals, and independent scholars.
• Archives
  The Archives section is dedicated to preserving and documenting important publications relating to Indian art. Over the years, Aakriti Art Gallery has built an extensive collection of exhibition catalogues, monographs, journals, brochures, invitations, research papers, and other archival material. Through this initiative, these valuable resources are being systematically catalogued and, wherever possible, digitised to support future research, scholarship, and informed collecting.
• Art News & Views
  Art News & Views serves as a curated information hub featuring gallery announcements, exhibition news, press releases, institutional updates, interviews, and links to significant articles published in newspapers, magazines, journals, and other media. It provides readers with a reliable overview of developments across the Indian art world while maintaining a clear distinction between editorial research and news reporting.

Beyond the Website
Selected articles from Talk Art, together with original research and documentation undertaken by Aakriti Art Gallery, will be periodically compiled and published in a biannual print and digital journal titled Art Insights. These volumes are intended to serve as lasting reference publications for collectors, scholars, students, libraries, museums, and institutions interested in Indian art.
