Sudip Roy is an acclaimed contemporary Indian artist whose practice spans watercolour, mixed media, and large-scale abstraction. Known for his versatility and command of both form and emotion, Roy’s work ranges from delicate architectural studies to vibrant, expressionistic compositions. With a career spanning over four decades, his art has consistently engaged with the poetics of space, memory, and cultural identity.
He graduated from the Government College of Arts & Crafts, Calcutta, in 1983, having already received several awards during his student years—including gold medals from Sahitya Parishad (1979) and the All India Fine Art Exhibition (1982), and multiple honors from the Indian Society of Oriental Art (1984–86). He was later awarded the AIFACS Award, New Delhi, in 1991.
Sudip Roy has held solo exhibitions at major galleries across India. These include Academy of Fine Arts (Kolkata), Jehangir Art Gallery and Taj Art Gallery (Mumbai), Sridharani and Art Today (New Delhi), Artworld (Chennai), Art Folio (Chandigarh), Gallery Renaissance (Bangalore), Gallery Aurodhan (Pondicherry), and others. His presence in the Indian art scene has been marked by a steady evolution—from academic precision to layered abstraction, often drawing inspiration from classical music, Indian cinema, and the philosophical resonance of color.
His critically acclaimed series include his watercolour interpretations of Banaras, his meditative Charulata works inspired by Satyajit Ray’s films, and a range of figurative and abstract works that merge modern technique with emotional depth.
Roy’s contributions to contemporary Indian art are recognized in both institutional and private collections across India and abroad. He continues to be represented by Aakriti Art Gallery and remains an important figure in Indian modernist and post-modernist circles.
