K.G. Subramanyan’s drawings and works on paper offer one of the most direct ways of entering his artistic world. In these sheets we meet the artist without the scale or public ambition of his murals and reverse paintings. What remains is the essential act of looking—patient, curious, and quietly inventive.
Everyday figures, domestic moments, animals, faces and gestures appear again and again. They are never merely recorded. A few decisive lines, a wash of colour, or a slight distortion of form is enough to turn ordinary observation into something memorable. The line searches rather than describes. Colour creates mood instead of copying nature. Humour, when it appears, is gentle and humane.
These works remind us that Subramanyan saw no hierarchy between the monumental and the modest, between craft and fine art, or between tradition and experiment. For him, the simplest sheet of paper could carry the same seriousness of thought as a large wall. The drawings gathered in this exhibition continue to demonstrate that belief with freshness and clarity.
They invite us not only to look at the images, but to look again at the world they quietly celebrate.
