Though started his career as graphic artist, Swapan later got interest in paintings also. After taking a diploma in Fine Arts from the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, and Post Diploma in Graphics from Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, he went to Aichi Prefecture Art University, Nagakute, Japan on a scholarship from Japan Government for research in print making. He taught at his Alma Mater Govt. College of Art & Craft, Kolkata) till his last breath. He took part in many exhibitions in Havana, Germany, Italy, Norway, USA, China, Japan, France, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Chandigarh, Raipur, Bhopal Print Biennale and National Exhibition. His graphics and paintings are in many prestigious public and private collections in India and abroad. Member of the Society of the Contemporary Artists since  1992, his untimely death on 22nd September, 2009 is a great loss for the Society as well as the art world.
