Sumana Ghosh (b.1978)

(b.-0001)

Sumana Ghosh is a contemporary Indian artist whose practice is shaped by an interdisciplinary grounding in the humanities and an independent engagement with visual art. Born in 1978, she graduated with Honours in History from the University of Calcutta, an academic background that has informed her reflective and conceptually attentive approach to image-making. Entirely self-taught as an artist, Ghosh developed her visual language outside formal art institutions, allowing for an intuitive and personal evolution of form and content.

Her artistic career gained early momentum through a series of significant solo exhibitions, which marked important milestones in her professional development. Her first solo exhibition was held at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, in 2005, followed by subsequent solo presentations at the Academy of Fine Arts and Chemould Art Gallery in 2006 and 2007 respectively. These exhibitions established her presence within Kolkata’s contemporary art circuit and drew attention to her emerging visual voice.

In addition to her solo shows, Ghosh has participated in several group exhibitions in Kolkata, contributing to collective platforms that engage with current artistic discourse. She has also attended an artist workshop at Swabhumi, Kolkata, which provided further exposure to collaborative practices and experimental approaches.

Sumana Ghosh’s work reflects a sensitivity shaped by historical awareness and lived experience, privileging introspection and subtle narrative over overt declaration. Her trajectory exemplifies the emergence of artists who negotiate contemporary concerns through self-directed practice, situating her within a growing field of independent voices in Indian art.
